Managing Emotional Energy
An important element in conflict resolution is the ability for the conflicting parties to be able to manage their own emotional energy. If you are involved in a conflict situation, one of the most constructive things that you can do is to manage your own emotional energy. The process below gives a skeleton of the steps you can take to achieve this outcome.
Three Step Process
Acknowledge and feel the emotion - rather than denying or minimizing it
Listen to the information or feedback the emotion is giving you. Ask yourself, for example, "Which of my principles, values or goals is at stake here?"
Guide, or channel, the emotional energy into an appropriate, constructive response. |
